Frederick MD Newborn Photographer Twin Session Jennifer Riley Photography

I got the call that every newborn photographer anticipates with trepidation.  Newborn TWINS!!! I was incredibly  nervous and wanted to get it right, but babies are unpredictable and with two newborns anything could happen! Lucky for us these sweet boy/girl twins were perfect.  They were a month old, but also born about a month early, but from the get go they were sleeping and just perfect.  I will be up late editing these every night because I just love them all.

Wow.  I am pretty sure when this family booked this family photography session, they didn’t expect it to be the hottest day of the year!  I don’t know how they managed it, but they didn’t even break a sweat, as we walked around beautiful Baker Park, in Frederick MD.  What lovely girls, inside and out, and they were complete naturals in front of the camera, as I  find girls of this age typically are.  I hope this family loves their photographs!

When I work with a family at a newborn photography session we get to know each other pretty well.  Sessions typically last three hours and the parents are entrusting me, a virtual stranger, to keep their precious newborn safe and comfortable, while capturing perfect pictures that they will cherish forever.  Well, 18 months ago I met Baby Violet when she was a newborn and immediately fell in love with her family. I photographed her every three months of her first year and became friends with her family along the way.

When her mother scheduled a lifestyle session in her amazingly gorgeous home, I was beyond excited.  Violet was a perfect model, while I captured her eating blueberries, coloring and reading her books and basically what ever she wanted to do, because, after all she is 1 1/2 and already has her own little agenda!  Love her!

The love and positivism emanates from this couple and I was beyond excited to photograph their newborn baby girl!  Evelyn had a dramatic entrance to the world, but when I met her at nine days old she was just the picture of happiness and love.  I am so fortunate to have such beautiful newborn babies and families to photograph:)

{Newborn Photographer Frederick MD} Jennifer Riley Photography

I’m not sure how it is possible that I always have the sweetest clients, but I have learned not to question it.  I went on location to meet baby Jackson, who lives in Baltimore.  I had photographed his cousin about a year an a half ago.  This sweet little guy and his lovely parents had only just gotten home from the hospital the day before.  I just love watching the love between new parents and their baby bonding, and falling in love with every smile and new face they make.  It's enough to give me baby fever every time;)

Newborn Photographer Frederick MD Jennifer Riley Photography Baby Parker

This family just added a third adorable child to their family.  I am always particularly flattered when a friend asks me to photograph their newborn baby.  Baby Parker was only 7 days old last week when he came to the studio.  He was the perfect model, super sleepy and super fluffy.  I just love those baby rolls and all that adorable blonde hair!!!

What to wear to your family photo-session Jennifer Riley Photography Frederick MD

By far the most common question I get from my clients is, “What should I wear?”  The short and sweet answer I give, is something cohesive, yet not overly matchy.  Choose 2-3 colors for your family pictures that go nicely together.  In this self-portrait I took of my uncooperative, but adorable boys,  I built the colors off of the skirt I was wearing, which worked well for this beach shot.

Accessories can really make it!  Scarves, hats, chunky necklaces, etc. –all of these things can take your look to the next level.  Pick your colors and then fill in the outfits with some color with the accessories.

Layers and texture work great, particularly when working with a neutral color palette.  Think fur, ruffles, lace- these all add depth and dimension to the overall image.

Shoes are important!  Sneakers don’t photograph well, unless we are talking about some cute Converse that go with the feel of your look.  As a self-proclaimed shoe lover, I can assure you, shoes can make or break a look.  I am a huge fan of tall boots, some cute ballet flats or even bare feet.  I love heels but be sure to bring some flats too.  We typically do a bit of walking during my sessions.

A few things to stay away from…
  • Clothes with logos, characters, or words.
  • Don’t have everyone wear the same color. This just looks unnatural and overly planned.
  • Overly bright colors of fluorescents. These just don’t photography well and take attention away from the subject.

Frederick MD Maternity Photographer Jennifer Riley Photography

When this lovely mama contacted for her maternity and newborn sessions me it was in the midst of my busy season and the fall colors were what everyone was craving in their photographs.  Leah had an amazing back story,  her wedding in Nebraska was in a blizzard, and she wanted her maternity photos to be in the snow as well.  I knew this was going to be the most amazing maternity session.

It was cold to be sure and I really didn't expect it to snow so it was around noon when I got a hold of Leah to see if she would be able to make it for sunset at Middletown Park.  It was chilly, and honestly I could barley manage to adjust the settings on my camera, not to mention the cold, coatless parents-to-be but as you can see they were amazingly gorgeous and rocked the shoot!
